José María Martiarena was a pioneer director and producer of Basque cinema. In the 1920s he recorded a series of documentaries on events and customs of the Basque Country. He was the brother of Ascensio Martiarena and formed a partnership with Esteban Guerequiz, a photojournalist for the newspaper La Voz de Guipúzcoa.
